Award-winning British designer Bethan Gray teamed up with The Glenlivet to create an experiential celebration of craft in the form of a bar serving a specially created menu of food and whisky cocktails for a series of events at the London Design Festival’s designjunction 20 – 23 September.

‘Everything I do is about collaborating with people to tell stories through craft, so it was a real honour to work with The Glenlivet to create this incredibly special experience at designjunction during the London Design Festival. A lot of my ideas come from spending time in nature, so what better inspiration than the Cairngorms?’

Bethan’s grandfather was a research forester in the Cairngorms, home of The Glenlivet, giving her a direct connection to the area. She explored the natural landscape surrounding the distillery and created a unique reinterpretation of her distinctive Dhow pattern inspired by the River Spey and the layers of mist that gather in the surrounding valleys. The hand-stained birds-eye maple and solid copper inlay reflect the charred barrels and copper stills used by The Glenlivet in the whisky making process.

The bar itself is made from marble with a brass inlay – a new technique mastered with long-term collaborator Mohamad Reza Shamsian and his Muscat-based workshop of 120 artisans.

‘Working with craftspeople is an important part of my practice and we worked with the same artisans who make our Dhow Furniture Collection for six months to develop this new technique. Marquetry is an ancient skill that we’re all well versed in, but we all pushed our expertise to the limit in developing this specialist method of inlaying solid brass into marble. I’m so pleased with the result.’

The Glenlivet bar comes after the success of the Jade Serenity Café that Bethan created for Frankfurt design fair Ambiente last year as part of an expansion for the designer into interior spaces and experiences. The bar will be the focus for a number of events, serving whisky cocktails and a specially created menu of food on the new Lustre tableware collection, created in partnership with 1882 Ltd’s Emily Johnson.

The bar will be finished with Bethan Gray Design’s Victoria lights for Editions Milano, shown for the first time shown in UK – fitting for the bar’s location within lightjunction – designjunction’s curation of international and innovative emerging lighting brands.
