Bistro Ebony

Inside the European-inspired space, a carefully curated palette of oak, quartzite, leather, and wool introduces warmth, while flexible seating zones cater to diverse dining preferences.

A refined dining experience shaped by furniture, light and materiality.

Bistro Ebony is an elevated yet welcoming hospitality venue set within the grand commercial volume of Angel Place, Sydney. The interior design by WMK reimagines a corporate foyer as an intimate bar and dining destination, balancing architectural scale with warmth and human connection.

“Bistro Ebony is a sophisticated yet welcoming dining destination shaped by warmth and theatre. Working with Living Edge on key furniture and joinery elements helped refine and elevate the design, complementing the oak, stone and leather palette.” - Kylie Heslop, Director-Practice, WMK Architecture

“We hope guests are immediately drawn in by the theatre of display — the energy of staff, the illuminated bottle wall, the feature tree anchoring the room.”

The 6.5-metre-high ceilings are animated by a suspended modular frame grid installation, while the Rosso Trentino Marble bar and integrated greenery establish a strong spatial identity. Layered lighting and materiality soften the experience from day to night.

The Muuto Cover Chair brings a sense of contemporary restraint and comfort to dining zones, its refined timber form complementing the venue’s palette of oak, leather and stone. Designed by Thomas Bentzen for Muuto, the Cover Chair interprets the Scandinavian design tradition in a modern form.

"Cover is born from a desire to create a comfortable and contemporary armchair in wood. I aimed for a crisp and vivid expression in the plywood while looking for a solid and grounded look in the frame and base of the chair." - Thomas Bentzen

"Three years of play and hard work in the making has resulted in a light, yet strong armchair, playing and taking the moulded veneer to its extreme."

A dramatic focal point within the space, Libreria del Vino by Elite To Be functions as both storage and architectural feature, reinforcing the venue’s European bar influence while adding rhythm, texture and visual depth. Made in Italy, the laser-cut iron frame features cavities suitable for storing wine bottles and can be tailored to suit different sizes and applications for both residential and hospitality settings. WMK worked in collaboration with Living Edge to design this system.

The addition of a customised rollable ladder, accompanying rails and integrated backlighting animates the vertical scale of the space, allowing access to elevated wine displays while introducing movement and a subtle sense of theatre.

Kylie Heslop, Director-Practice at WMK Architecture said the design studio greatly valued the collaboration with Living Edge in bringing the vision to life.

“The Muuto Cover Chair introduces sculptural restraint and comfort to the dining setting, while the Libreria del Vino acts as both functional storage and architectural feature — reinforcing the European influence and adding rhythm and presence to the space.”

Together, these considered design elements create a space that feels sophisticated yet approachable—an inviting destination within Sydney’s CBD that encourages guests to linger.
