The British designer tours Australia for Living Edge in a series of talks across Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane exploring design, materials and process.
Tom Dixon has returned to Australia for a three-city tour across Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane, hosting a series of exclusive events from 11th–13th March. Bringing together the local design community, the tour offered a rare opportunity to hear directly from the world-renowned industrial designer and creative director.
In Melbourne, Tom explored the ideas shaping Design Research Studio—the design and innovation consultancy at the heart of his practice. Since its launch in 2007, the studio has worked with global clients across products, interiors, architecture, branding and content, continually pushing the boundaries of how design operates across disciplines and scales.
In conversation with Sue Fenton of Woods Bagot, Tom reflected on a career defined by experimentation, material curiosity and constant evolution. He traced his beginnings to hands-on, self-taught experimentation—an approach that continues to inform his instinct for materiality and making.
In Sydney, guests gathered at Living Edge’s Woollahra showroom for an afternoon of conversation and closer engagement with pieces from his latest collection. An immersive display of the brand’s furniture, lighting and accessories, the dedicated store captures the distinctive identity of the British designer, bringing an experience shaped by the creative energy of the brand’s London headquarters.
The tour also spotlighted a series of new and evolving pieces, including the portable lighting and the expanded Groove outdoor collection.
Jack Portable
A playful portable light designed for indoor and outdoor use. Lightweight, stackable and easy to move, it’s made from durable polyethylene using an air rotation-moulding process.
Bell Portable
Referencing vintage car bumpers, its reflective metal shade casts a warm, focused light, with up to nine hours of battery life.
Groove Outdoor
Ridged aluminium forms and an Art Deco-inspired language deliver a durable, tactile and corrosion-resistant collection, with new additions including a round table and lounge chair.
Pose
With a dynamic and movable base, Pose can be moved to deliver a beam of concentrated lighting, magnified through a custom Fresnel lens into an illuminating beam.
Tom Dixon’s visit reinforced the strength and curiosity of the local design community, fostering meaningful dialogue between global design thinking and regional perspectives.
Thank you to all who joined us, and to Sue Fenton for moderating the Melbourne conversation.
