The first sculpture, from his Converge series, sits in the entryway on a low plinth. The remaining three, from his Isle of Hearts collection, are on display in the BassamFellows section of the showroom.

Shimeld has rapidly become one of Australia’s most revered new artists, gaining increasing notoriety throughout Australia among collectors, curators, and designers. Shimeld’s works are characterised by attention to structure and form and range from diagrammatic, transparent pieces made from powder-coated steel to monolithic pieces cast or welded in solid bronze or steel. Shimeld has recently worked closely with BassamFellows, who view his work as a natural complement to the brand’s well-known minimalistic style. BassamFellows introduced seven of Shimeld’s works alongside their own new pieces at this year’s Salone de Mobile in Milan.

Shimeld graduated from with a Bachelor of Visual Arts from the University of Sydney, Sydney College of the Arts in 2000, where he majored in glass. He ultimately moved into bronze and steel crafting, attracted to the abstract and illusory effect.

Shimeld was selected as a finalist for multiple art prizes, including: Sculpture by the Sea 2014, Woollahra Small Sculpture Prize 2014 (Highly commended), University of Western Sydney Sculpture Award 2014 (Winner Janice Reid Emerging Artists Award), Sculpture at Scenic World 2014, Sculpture at Sawmillers Reserve 2014 (Winner Mayor’s Award), Mt Buller Sculpture Award 2013, Montalto Sculpture Prize 2013, Sculpture at Scenic World 2013, Willoughby Sculpture Prize 2011, The UWS Acquisitive Sculpture Award and Exhibition 2010, The Deakin University Contemporary Small Sculpture Award 2010, The Sawmillers Reserve Sculpture Prize 2010, and Sculpture by the Sea 2009. His work has also been acquired by Artbank Australia as well as by a number of private collectors.
