During the 1930s and 40s, Scandinavian design was defined by functionalism - simple structures, clear lines and a preference for natural materials like wood. By the late 1950s, a new generation of designers began to challenge these conventions, embracing emerging technologies to explore more fluid, sculptural forms. This chair stands as a defining expression of that transition.
Designed by Verner Panton, its bold heart-shaped silhouette reflects his belief that new materials demand new forms. Rejecting traditional typologies, Panton used innovative construction techniques to free furniture from classical constraints. The result is a chair that not only marks a pivotal moment in design history but also anticipates the colour, energy and experimentation that would define Pop Art furniture in the 1960s.
