Designed in 1969 by Verner Panton, the Living Tower stands as one of the most experimental seating concepts of the late 1960s. Created during a period when designers were exploring informal “living landscapes,” the piece challenges traditional furniture layouts by extending seating vertically rather than horizontally.
Rising to over two metres in height, the organically shaped structure contains a series of upholstered niches arranged across four different seating levels. These platforms allow users to sit, recline or lounge in varied positions, encouraging interaction and shared experience within a single sculptural object.
The tower is constructed with a stable birch plywood frame, layered with polyurethane foam and fully upholstered for comfort. Its soft geometry and enveloping forms create an inviting environment while maintaining a bold architectural presence within the room.
Part furniture, part spatial installation, the Living Tower reflects Panton’s vision of interiors as immersive environments where colour, form and human interaction merge. Whether placed in creative workplaces, public lounges or expressive residential interiors, it transforms seating into a dynamic social landscape.
