This week Living Edge proudly hosted Total Design, a thought-provoking panel discussion that explored Knoll’s enduring impact on architecture, interiors, and workplace design.
Celebrating Knoll’s pioneering spirit, this event brought together a panel of leading Australian designers alongside a special international guest to examine the enduring relevance of Knoll’s design philosophy today.
At the centre of the conversation was Florence Knoll’s pioneering concept of Total Design—a holistic approach that seamlessly integrated architecture, interior planning, and furniture into one cohesive vision. Alexandra Ramundi (MillerKnoll, Workplace Knowledge Consultant) opened the discussion by unpacking how Florence Knoll developed this philosophy, and how her collaborative process with architects and designers helped transform not only Knoll but the broader landscape of workplace design.
The panel also reflected on contemporary practice, particularly the responsibility to guide clients toward more thoughtful and sustainable decisions. Each speaker stressed the importance of encouraging reuse, recycling, and investment in enduring pieces, rather than perpetuating a cycle of disposable consumption.

Technology was another key theme. While acknowledging its potential, the panel warned against over-engineered solutions that confuse or quickly fail. Instead, they championed simplicity and intuitive design, emphasising that the most effective tools are those that seamlessly support, rather than overshadow, the user experience.
Closing the discussion, moderator Alice Blackwood posed the question of who or what might become the next design icon. The panellists agreed it is unlikely to be a single individual or brand, but rather a collective response—designs that use sustainable, durable materials or address significant industry challenges in ways that redefine the future.
The evening reaffirmed Knoll’s legacy as both timeless and forward-looking, underscoring the ongoing relevance of Total Design in shaping spaces that are authentic, innovative, and built to last.

We’re so grateful to our panel for making Total Design such a memorable evening. Emily Moss, Principal at Hassell, spoke about the ongoing responsibility of designers in shaping the workplace; Brooke Lloyd, Director at COX, offered her perspective on client education and sustainability; and Juliette Arent, Principal at Arent&Pyke, shared how Knoll’s philosophy continues to influence interiors at a more personal scale. Special thanks to Alexandra Ramundi, Workplace Strategist at MillerKnoll, who travelled from the U.S. to bring an international lens to the discussion.
Finally, thank you to Alice Blackwood for moderating with warmth and clarity, drawing out the big ideas while keeping the conversation lively and engaging.
