Studio Kaksikko

Based in Helsinki this design studio specializes in ceramic tableware and wooden furniture, founded by Salla Luhtasela and Wesley Walters. The duo shares an interest in functional, understated forms that highlight each material’s tactile qualities, as well as in the production process itself. They met while studying at Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture and have collaborated on a broad range of professional projects under the studio name Kaksikko.

Considering themselves “formgivers” before designers, their process of working with their hands from an early stage has a large influence on the designs created. Studio Kaksikko also produce their own designs by hand in small series, so their familiarity with wood and ceramics lends both an attention to detail and a practicality to their designs that reflect an understanding of these materials. Salla and Wesley share a desire to design and make things that people will use until they wear out.
Studio Kaksikko's view on Scandinavian design:

"Living and studying in Finland, we are always surrounded by the work of some of Scandinavia’s greatest designers from the 20th century; something that certainly has an impact on our own ideas. Something that we find to be very relevant today was the focus of 20th century Scandinavian designs on taking a rational, functionalist approach to designing objects for everyday use that will be relevant for years into the future."
