Girard is best known for his textile designs. He headed the fabric and textile division of Herman Miller between 1952 and 1975, creating fabrics for works by George Nelson and Charles and Ray Eames.

Together they greatly influenced design throughout the US and the rest of the world. He also created a furniture range for Herman Miller.

In addition, Girard designed restaurants and was renowned for his work with the US airline Braniff, where his rebranding campaign was based on the idea of “The End of the Plain Plane”. Alexander Girard died in 1993.
