Description
Created by Charles and Ray Eames in 1956, moulded veneer shells curve around individually upholstered cushions, creating a composition that feels substantial without becoming visually heavy. Each chair and ottoman is hand-assembled, with concealed hardware securing the cushions without interrupting the timber surface. Die-cast aluminium bases and back braces provide precise support, while resilient natural-rubber shock mounts allow the shells to respond gently as the body settles. The chair base also incorporates a smooth swivel.
Cushions are designed to retain their shape, with the natural creasing of the upholstery intended to soften and develop character over time. Two chair sizes, multiple veneer choices and a broad upholstery palette allow the set to suit residential and professional interiors. Oiled finished require periodic hand oiling, while lacquered shells need only dusting.
A bamboo-based upholstery option offers a soft, durable and highly colourfast alternative, reducing the carbon footprint of the chair’s materials by up to 35%.
