The Upepo Carpet by Walter Knoll takes its name from the Swahili word for wind. Designed by Helmut Scheufele, it draws on the shifting force of air across the African savannah, where sand, dust, cloud and sun gather into a complex play of colour.
Its surface has a painterly depth, moving through warm earth, muted grey, soft ochre and rusted tones. Rather than reading as a fixed pattern, Upepo feels atmospheric and unsettled in the most considered way, bringing movement to the floor while helping the room feel anchored.
The low pile carpet is made from 30% wool, 20% nettle fibre and 50% silk, giving the design texture, lustre and tonal variation. In a living room or dining room, it can bring warmth beneath furniture and define the centre of the space. In bedrooms, home offices and professional interiors, it offers a quieter kind of drama, suited to rooms shaped for conversation, reflection or considered work. After the storm, the room exhales.
