Conceived by Anthony Guerrée, Marfa pays homage to the work of Donald Judd, especially his iconic use of minimal, repeated forms to explore volume and negative space. The table’s name is a nod to Marfa, Texas—a remote desert town where Judd relocated in 1971 and established an enduring center for minimalist art.
Marfa’s base is composed of large, intersecting aluminium beams arranged diagonally to create a complex yet stable structure. This configuration recalls the impossible staircases of M.C. Escher, where each segment appears to float above the next, engaging the viewer with a dynamic yet balanced rhythm. This stable base contrasts with the softness and fluidity of the blurred glass top.
The base of Marfa is crafted using sand-cast aluminium. Molten aluminium is poured into a sand mould, which is broken after casting, ensuring that no two bases are identical.
The tabletop of Marfa is offered in embossed glass or, optionally, in marble. The cast glass top, unlike standard industrial glass, is created by pouring molten glass onto a flat surface. This technique results in a slightly uneven, almost undulating finish with organic ripples that mimic water’s fluidity.
