Tom Dixon Embraces Modularity with Plump and Fat.

For Tom Dixon, newness is less about chasing trends and more about constant reinvention, pushing boundaries through material experimentation, unexpected collaborations, and a relentless curiosity for what’s next. It’s a commitment to progress that manifests in modular forms, portable technology, and future-facing ideas that respond to how we live now and how we might live tomorrow.

Modular furniture has become an essential component of contemporary interior design, responding to the increasing need for flexibility, adaptability, and personalisation in both residential and commercial spaces. As living and working environments evolve, becoming more fluid, compact, or open plan, the ability to reconfigure seating to suit changing needs is more relevant than ever.

Tom Dixon, whose work has long challenged convention through material innovation and sculptural form, stepping into modular design was a natural progression. With the creation of the Plump and Fat sofa systems, he has brought his bold aesthetic into a format that’s not only visually impactful but also highly functional, allowing users to shape their spaces with greater freedom and intention. It’s a smart move that aligns with the shifting rhythm of modern life while expanding the versatility of the Tom Dixon universe.

Being a fully modular system, it offers great adaptability. The Fat sofas feature a steel leg base, maintaining the aesthetic coherence with the rest of the Fat range. This comprehensive, versatile system is equally at home as a ‘living island’ in residences or in expansive configurations in airports, lobbies, and office breakout areas.

Fat Modular Sofas

The Fat Modular Sofa has evolved from the classic Tom Dixon Fat seating collection, now with a fully modular system engineered for ultimate adaptability. Its low-profile, generous proportions and integrated arm design allow configurations to float within a space, ideal for creating “living islands” in lobbies, offices, or open-plan homes.

Constructed similarly to Tom Dixon’s new Plump Range, Fat has also been designed with sustainable timber, quality upholstery and a steel-base framework, Fat’s modularity supports a truly personalised seating ecosystem.

Though not strictly modular, it offers various configurations, allowing it to transform into an ‘L-Shape’ or function as a 2.5 or 3-seater. Despite its ample size, it maintains a balance, complementing rather than overpowering the room. Versatile enough to complement any aesthetic, it is available in a wide range of fabrics and materials.

Plump

The new Plump design takes cues from the classic Chesterfield silhouette, its low curved back and soft, rounded arms recall English tradition, but its execution is thoroughly modern: stripped of ornament for a clean, semi circular elegance. Plump offers over 750 configurations from chaises to expansive wide seat layouts. The Plump range has been built on FSC certified timber frames, no sag springs, high resilience foam, and powder coated steel legs. And its plush curves provide a “marshmallow like welcome,” making it at home in both residential lounges and commercial environments.

In embracing modularity, Tom Dixon has reframed the sofa as a design statement, confirming that in modern interiors, form and function must flex with life’s rhythms. Together, Plump and Fat articulate Dixon’s belief that furniture should mirror evolving social behaviours, supporting informal working, lounging, gathering, and be as dynamic as the spaces they inhabit.
