Quarry Hill House, located in the regional Victorian city of Bendigo, is a testament to the power of layering tones and textures to craft a visually captivating and deeply personal family home.
Designed by Chelsea Hing, this project showcases the studio's ability to reinterpret architectural intent and infuse it with dynamic energy that reflects the client’s lifestyle. Engaged late in the build process, the design team focused on improving the layout and introducing a sophisticated material palette, addressing the inward-looking orientation of the home’s double-height void and expansive interior spaces.
Living Edge’s contributions to the project thoughtfully compliment the home’s rich narrative. The Walter Knoll Saddle chair and barstools bring sculptural refinement to the space, while the e15 Enoki in metal adds a contemporary, industrial edge. The inclusion of the iconic Vitra Wiggle chair and stool introduces playful, organic shape, enhancing the layered interplay of textures and tones throughout the home.
Materiality was the cornerstone of Chelsea Hing’s vision. Eschewing plasterboard wherever possible, creating a striking contrast and rhythm across the double-height void. These timber finishes, combined with curated nooks for artwork and custom joinery, imbue the space with warmth and cohesion, anchoring the design in timeless natural beauty.
This meticulous layering of materials extends into other parts of the home, with bold ochre hues in the office complementing concrete finishes. Rich textiles have been paired with stone throughout to create bold yet sophisticated moments. The designs provided by Living Edge further highlight the material diversity that defines the interior landscape of Quarry Hill House. Located at the bar and at the dining table are elements from the Walter Knoll Saddle collection - crafted with precision, featuring a sturdy frame and high-quality leather upholstery that highlights the brand’s commitment to timeless design and durability.
e15, known for its designs featuring bold simplicity, is also well suited within the space. Enoki in metal introduces a sleek, industrial contrast. The interesting metal finish exemplifies how every layer of the interior contributes to creating a rich, multidimensional space that feels both curated and lived-in.
Meanwhile, the Vitra Wiggle chair and stool, crafted from corrugated cardboard, offer an unexpected yet playful tactile quality. This trio of furniture pieces not only underscores the versatility of the design but also reflects the dynamic interplay of textures and materials throughout the home.
Through these deliberate choices, Quarry Hill House becomes more than a living space—it’s a tactile, emotional experience that reflects the client’s aspirations and lifestyle. Ultimately, Quarry Hill House exemplifies the profound impact of thoughtful design. From the artful layering of finishes to the inclusion of iconic furniture pieces, Chelsea Hing’s approach transforms a contemporary home into a deeply personalised and enduringly beautiful retreat.
