Aidan Mawwhinney

Aidan Mawhinney

CEO, Living Edge – 20 Years

This year marks two decades since Aidan Mawhinney joined Living Edge, having started with the company in 2005, before stepping into the role of CEO in 2007. Over the years, Aidan has been instrumental in shaping the company’s direction, setting industry benchmarks, and fostering a culture of collaboration and shared values.

What originally brought you to Living Edge, and what was your first role?
I had previously worked for a company called Studio DPA, which represented Walter Knoll and Howe. Living Edge later acquired the business in 2000, though I had just left by then. I knew the two directors well and was intrigued by this new company, Living Edge, which had Herman Miller – a brand I had wanted to work with in the UK – along with Walter Knoll and Howe. I knew they were onto something. In March 2005, I joined as General Manager.

What about Living Edge has kept you inspired for two decades?
Being able to set an industry benchmark, and hopefully continue raising it, elevates not only what we do but also how the industry operates. Delivering world-class environments for the office, home, and beyond is always inspiring, especially as we get to work on some of the very best projects in Australia. It’s also incredibly rewarding to work with such a diverse group of people who share similar values and a common desire to make Living Edge the best it can be.

What’s one lesson you’ve learned over the years that continues to shape your leadership today?
People do business with people. Doesn’t matter how good your product is or how well you show it. People will always do business with those they like and those who make their life easier.

If you could describe the last 20 years in one word what would that be?
Long. Or Fun ๐Ÿ™‚

Stephen Smith

Senior A&D Residential Consultant, QLD – 20 Years

This conversation also delves into the nuances of desirability, why sustainability alone isn't enough, and why even the greenest product is ineffective if it fails to appeal to consumers. Isaacs’ eco-audit tool incorporates factors like price, colour range, and configuration variants to assess appeal alongside environmental impact.

What originally brought you to Living Edge, and what was your first role here?
I was studying Interior Design part-time in the evenings at Design Centre Enmore while working in catering at Citi Bank and Ernst & Young. The manager of the new Living Edge Studio on Commonwealth Street, Darren Howell, happened to be a client of my partner and offered me a retail position. Within a couple of weeks of starting, one of the A&D Residential Consultants left, and I stepped into the role.

Over the years, what’s been the biggest change you've experienced? In the residential design space? in yourself? Or in your work?
It is hard to say the biggest as all three have steadily changed and improved. I’m going to say my work as this encompasses all three. The way we work, our environment we work in and the people I work with are vastly different to when I started, all are much improved with age.

What’s a moment, big or small, that made you stop and think, “This is why I love what I do”?
The morning that I walked into the new Woolstores to start work, I remember thinking “OMG, we have arrived.” It’s really something when you are a part of the best in the world.

If you could describe the last 20 years in one word what would that be?
Achievement. ๐Ÿ’Ž

Suzie Spicer

Suzie Spicer

Accounts Receivable Officer – 20 Years

Marking 20 years with Living Edge, Suzie Spicer has been part of the company’s journey through growth, change, and transformation. From witnessing pivotal milestones that shaped Living Edge’s independence to contributing her own dedication behind the scenes, Suzie has seen first-hand how the company has stayed true to its commitment to representing the very best in global design.

You’ve seen the company grow and change, what’s one thing that’s stayed the same?
That Living Edge has always remained committed to representing the very best in quality furniture and accessories from around the world. It’s a constant that continues to define Living Edge and inspire confidence in both our team and our clients.

Is there a moment or milestone at Living Edge you’ve felt especially proud of?
When the current directors took control, Living Edge became independent, it was a real turning point. It gave them the freedom to finally implement their own vision for the company. To see all of our hard work turn things around was something I’ll always be proud of.

What does reaching the 20-year milestone mean to you?
It feels like the time has gone quickly, yet when I hear the phrase “20 years,” it suddenly feels much longer, so it’s a bit of a contradiction. What I do know is that I’m proud of the work I’ve done and the contribution I’ve made to Living Edge throughout my tenure. In the end, that pride in what I’ve helped achieve means more to me than the actual number of years.

If you could describe the last 20 years in one word what would that be?
Rollercoaster! ๐ŸŽข
