Description
The Vostra Armchair by Walter Knoll belongs to a particular moment in design history. Its story begins with Danish-American designer Jens Risom, whose small beechwood chair with strap covers formed the starting point for what would become Vostra. When Hans Knoll established himself in the United States, he included the piece in his collection and later sent it to his father, Walter Knoll, in Germany.
Walter Knoll developed the idea into a chair of tubular steel feet and carefully resolved upholstery, placing Vostra into production in 1949. In post-war Germany, where interiors were still largely shaped by more traditional furniture, Vostra suggested something lighter and more informal. It was compact, modern and relaxed, a chair for a different way of living.
That clarity remains its strength today. A slim tubular steel frame supports a lightly upholstered seat and back, giving the chair an easy posture without visual heaviness. The gently angled profile invites reading, conversation or a quiet pause between tasks.
The Vostra Armchair is small enough to sit naturally in a reading corner, yet distinctive enough to hold its own in more composed interiors. Available across an extensive range of upholstery options, Vostra can be tailored for living rooms, bedrooms, home offices and spaces for focus, reception and retreat.
