In 1985 Maria Sanchez created Squash, a series of ceramic bowls turned and painted by hand composed of three parts in multiple color schemes: the first piece made by the designer had a blue base and a yellow bowl, crossed diagonally by an oblong red block. This was followed by four other limited-edition variations with a checked black and white base and a bowl in violet, light blue, yellow or gold.

She currently lives in Argentina, where she is a strategic design consultant for many companies and government administrations, and heads the Fondo Nacional de las Artes. Sanchez is also an academic researcher and teaches at several universities in Argentina, Mexico, Panama, and Chile.
