Florence Knoll Table Desk, Round

With her typical modesty, Florence Knoll described her own line of desks as the “meat and potatoes” which had to be provided. “I did it because I needed the piece of furniture for a job and it wasn’t there, so I designed it.”

Description

While this may have been the motivation for the 1961 Table Desk, the result is anything but a fill-in piece. Perfectly proportioned and flawlessly detailed, the design embodies Florence Knoll’s adherence to the teachings of her favourite mentor, Mies van der Rohe.

Seeking to create a space better suited to the executive’s primary function — communication — Florence reconsidered the illogical layout from an architectural perspective. She eliminated the imposing desk, replacing it with the more inviting table desk, placed parallel to the back wall. Storage was moved to behind the table in a matching low credenza.

Despite being conceived for the office, the table has found itself in many dining rooms over the last fifty years.

Table tops available in marble, veneer or laminate. Base available in a polished or satin chrome finish.
