Designed in 1948 by Alexander Girard for Knoll, the Girard Coffee Table reflects the designer’s playful interpretation of modernism. Introduced as Model 108, the table stands apart from the strict geometry of its time through its asymmetrical form, introducing a sense of movement and informality to interiors.
The tabletop is crafted from book-matched timber veneer over a Baltic birch core, finished with a precise 45-degree bevelled edge that enhances its refined profile. This is paired with slender powder-coated steel legs, creating a balanced contrast between warmth and structure.
Girard, widely recognised for bringing colour, texture and folk-inspired expression into modern design, infused this piece with subtle character while maintaining functional clarity. The table’s irregular shape allows for flexible placement alongside sofas and lounge seating, adapting easily to both residential and commercial environments.
Reintroduced by Knoll following a major retrospective of Girard’s work, the design remains a timeless example of mid-century innovation — where sculptural form, material integrity and a sense of play converge in a quietly expressive everyday object.
