Description

Inky Dhow is an evolution of the Dhow pattern, inspired by the billowing sails of traditional Omani sailing boats, translated into a large-scale artwork by hand using sweeping strokes of a calligraphy brush and ink. This lends a painterly depth to Inky Dhow’s more organic, flowing lines and its intense ultramarine hue.

Inky Dhow’s lines have been translated into a marquetry pattern using Italian maple veneers which are dyed immediately after being cut from the tree when still ‘wet’ to lend a deeper, richer colour. Veneers in blue and white are laser cut and then matched together, ensuring every Inky Dhow piece is unique.

Each Inky Dhow piece is elevated by the touch of the human hand and eye, where the challenge of managing the flow of the many laser-cut pieces is one meticulously met by Mohammad Reza Shamsian and his Muscat-based marquetry artisans.
