Designed in Tom Dixon’s London studio, the Speck Rug explores monochrome through texture rather than graphic pattern. Its surface is composed of carded New Zealand wool woven against contrasting dark threads, producing an irregular field of soft, pebble-like loops. The result feels expressive up close, yet measured when viewed across a room.
Handwoven by skilled artisans in Northern India, Speck combines New Zealand wool, polyester and cotton. Variations in the yarn and weave remain visible, allowing the material and the maker’s hand to shape its character. Broad darker bands at either end frame the lighter central field, while black fringes add a crisp finish and a subtle change of rhythm.
The restrained Monochrome palette makes Speck easy to place without becoming anonymous. Beneath a dining table, it defines the setting while allowing timber, stone and metal finishes to remain distinct. In a living room or bedroom, its dense texture softens the surrounding architecture and introduces warmth underfoot. It can also settle neatly into a home office, bringing visual depth beneath a desk without distracting from focused work.
Each rug carries the small irregularities inherent to handweaving, giving the surface a more human quality than machine-made uniformity. Professional cleaning is recommended to preserve the wool’s texture, contrast and finish over time.
