According to Walter Knoll, the aura of good leather underlines the quality of design. Natural unevenness lends even more character, a definite sign of life. It is actually one of the characteristics of the very best leathers, along with suppleness and a minimal amount of dye, allowing the leather to breathe. The selection of hides and the development of colours are two of the most important decisions for the subsequent quality of the furniture.

“Over the years, I have learnt that leather is one of the most fascinating natural materials. It challenges us again and again with its unique characteristics. To face these challenges and to experience them every day at work, makes my job truly special.” – Uwe Steinmann, leather expert at Walter Knoll

Fabric and Leather Control

Just as the right clothing helps determine a person's presence, the right cover determines the charm of a piece of furniture. There is an extensive collection of fabrics and leathers to choose from for all Walter Knoll products. All materials are subject to strict tests to determine their durability, colourfastness and how easy they are to clean.

A Tribute to Craftsmanship

The design and development process is more than just a quest for the most attractive form. A piece of furniture is defined by how a person sits in it, whether they feel comfortable and supported – and how the materials interact with the surrounding environment. The sense of creativity in each piece, particularly in the details. The selection of materials and how they are implemented. The structure of the upholstery. The new products represent meticulousness in the best possible sense, from the initial idea to the art of the finishing touches.

Walter Knoll Australia

Walter Knoll was founded by the Knoll family, leather shoemakers in Stuttgart, Germany, in 1865. They later evolved into furniture making in the early 1900s. Built on craftsmanship and upholstery skills, Walter Knoll is world-recognised as a leader in furniture design and manufacturing.

Walter Knoll Australia was formed after a foray into the Australian market in a collaboration with an Adelaide upholstery company, WK Designs, in 1980. Originally only contracted to upholster around six pieces of their range, the business experienced mass interest in the product, driven by the high-quality objects being produced out of the South Australian facility.

In 2008, Walter Knoll bought WK Designs, with the decision to stay in SA driven by people and relationships already in place. Walter Knoll made a considered decision based on people. People are the skill, the knowledge and heart of the company. Without them, there is no company.

After this business move, which concentrated on building the skillsets already held by local craftsman, Walter Knoll Australia moved to their current custom-built facility in 2012. What is unique about this is that the Adelaide manufacturing plant is the only other production facility in the world for Walter Knoll outside of its operations in Germany, an impressive feather in the cap for local manufacturing.
