Ten Years in the Making

After a decade of research and development, Tom Dixon Studio is unveiling Groove, a highly anticipated outdoor furniture collection. This marks a significant milestone for the founder and eponymous designer, whose relentless drive for innovation in high-tech manufacturing has finally culminated in a range that blends style, durability, and practicality.

The Groove collection has been more than 10 years in the making. Its roots trace back to Tom Dixon’s collaboration with a German engineering company in 2012 and, more recently, with Hydro, the world’s leading aluminium producer. These partnerships fueled years of accumulated knowledge, propelling Dixon’s obsession with high-performance materials and advanced production technology.

The Inspiration: Hydro Chair and Beyond

The inspiration for Groove lies in Dixon’s enduring fascination with pushing the boundaries of material technology. The journey began with the Hydro Chair, launched in 2021 in collaboration with Hydro, the largest aluminium producer in the world. This chair drew inspiration from the deep bucket seats of 1950s sports cars, known for their dramatic curves and ergonomic designs.

Dixon’s vision was to create a chair that could capture the sleek, aerodynamic aesthetics of these classic car seats while achieving a modern, minimal look. The biggest challenge lay in manipulating aluminium into a seamless, single-piece structure—a testament to advanced production techniques. The Hydro Chair’s success paved the way for Groove, where similar principles were applied to develop a full range of outdoor furniture.

With Groove, Dixon took this concept further, adding art-deco-inspired ridges to the designs. These ridges not only enhance the tactile and visual appeal but also demonstrate the precision and versatility of industrial aluminium production. The collection embodies the perfect balance of form, function, and material innovation.

A Textural and Functional Revolution

Groove is made from durable aluminium, designed to withstand all weather conditions while remaining corrosion-resistant. Featuring art-deco-inspired ridges, the collection includes an oblong table, chairs, armchairs, and stools. Available in two shades—Moss and Putty—the collection offers timeless appeal that fits effortlessly into any outdoor setting. Optional seat cushions enhance comfort for extended use.

One person can easily move up to six chairs, enhancing convenience and practicality. The industrialised aluminium version is also half the price of handmade brass, offering great value without compromising on design and durability. The collection features a high-quality polyester powder-coated finish, designed for outdoor use. This finish operates at a lower curing temperature, ensuring higher energy savings while being solvent-free and VOC-free.
