Named for its location in the historically significant Gascoigne Estate in Melbourne’s leafy suburb of Malvern, Gascoigne House retains its existing heritage canvas while crafting a discerning, contemporary iteration through interior decoration. A new atmosphere has been layered upon the old, unfurling to both emphasise and juxtapose the home’s original Federation details — stained glass windows, ornate mouldings, wall panelling, picture rails and window seats — creating an elegant and deeply relevant home for a family of four.

Stepping into the home, a custom marble console is the first indicator of a thoughtful negotiation between eras achieved through a dedication to classic pieces. This methodology is carried throughout the adjoining rooms which abide by the same sentiment of pairing classicism with vintage so that heritage becomes the natural mediator.

The formality which would have once applied in the front rooms of Gascoigne House has been softened and a new use instilled through less rigid decoration. A library and TV room have emerged, distinguished by pieces which feel ever so slightly audacious yet befitting to define a bespoke, transcendental style reflective of the family who lives here. The expressive stone in the entry console is continued through a Monument Shelving System from La Chance which anchors the room with its graceful art deco artistry.

The Monument Shelving System was imagined by Mathieu Girard et Gauthier Pouillart of Atelier Cocorico. The visual strength and stability of Monument relies on an ingenious construction system that does not require any tools. The result is a brutalist, material centred piece with a strong sculptural presence. The two imposing “cross” columns that constitute the superstructure are the visual signature of the shelf but also present and enhance beautiful objects or books. The monument system comes in a large variety of dimensions, and it is possible to make mono-material shelves or combine marble and wood.

Rocky by La Chance

Rocky

The Rocky Credenza is evident of this same philosophy. For which, designer Charles Kalpakian plays with our perception of space and volume with an object that reveals itself and changes according to the observer’s point of view. Rocky is made by one artisan who bends and wields each sheet of steel together. The result is a seemingly monolithic yet light sculpture that is patiently polished before it gets its signature textured epoxy lacquer.

Float

Float is a sculptural coffee table that challenges senses and perception. A massive metal cone apparently floats above a mirror polished steel base. The geometrical design is softened by refined details such as the bevelled lip on the edges of the perfect circle of the cone. The production of Float is a technical challenge, and each table is made artisanally to the specification of the client.
