A Wall of Light

Designer Erwan Bouroullec realises a long-held ambition: to create a broad, immersive surface of light.

Presenting Maap by Erwan Bouroullec for Flos

Erwan Bouroullec explores three recurring themes in his work: geometry, natural structures and lightness. Conceived as a large-scale luminous element, Maap brings these ideas together through an ultralight, paper-like membrane that transforms the wall into an architectural surface of light.

Developed over many years, Maap emerged through experimentation rather than conventional technical drawings. Bouroullec’s longstanding interest in ultra-thin materials informed the process, resulting in a design that balances structure and spontaneity, precision and chance.

Constructed from a lightweight, tear-resistant material, the diffuser is attached to its metal framework via oversized magnetic buttons, known as dots, positioned at each light source. These elements stabilise the shell while allowing it to be endlessly reshaped.

While geometry establishes the framework, each installation is unique. The diffuser is intentionally crumpled during installation, introducing an element of unpredictability to an otherwise precise form. This simple act creates a microstructure within the material, stabilising the surface and determining its final appearance.

“Maap is the realisation of a long-held desire to create expansive light sources that diffuse illumination across a broad surface. This results in a subtle, immersive glow that surrounds you, spreading softly and evenly.”

Rather than emanating from a single point, light is distributed across the entire surface, producing an even, ambient illumination that gently envelops a space. Rooted in the simple act of making, Maap invites participation, with the final form shaped by the user’s hand. The result is a lighting object that exists between geometry and nature, intention and instinct.

Available in three sizes — Wall 1, Wall 2 and Wall 3 — the system can extend beyond three metres, creating a luminous architectural presence that adapts to its surroundings while remaining unique in every installation.
