Founded by Willi and Erika Fehlbaum, the owners of a shopfitting business, Vitra entered the furniture market in 1957. Vitra believes in the creation of durable products that omit non-essential elements and last a long time; built on the power of good design.

It is also known for the Vitra Design Museum in Germany, the purpose of which is to make available to the public Vitra’s growing collection of chairs and other furniture pieces. The museum was built in 1989 and designed by Frank Gehry – the first of his buildings in Europe.
