Tim Ross, The Rumpus Room to the First McMansion on the Block.

‘The Rumpus Room and Other Stories from the Suburbs‘ combines Tim Ross' signature dry humour with nostalgic tales inspired by Australian architecture and suburban pastimes. It is definitely a uniquely entertaining new read.

Since the release of The Rumpus Room in May of this year, author, comedian and mid-century enthusiast Tim Ross has toured the country sharing his inspirations for his latest book.

“Houses are the vessels for our lives and therefore our stories. I see this book as a series of stories that capture a sense of how we live. Some of them are personal and some are not, but I think all of them speak of some of the experiences we share as Australians. It’s not a book about architecture, but it’s a book inspired by architecture.” Said author, Tim

Tim ‘Rosso’ Ross is one of the Australian entertainment industry’s true multi-talented performers. He’s found success in stand-up comedy, radio, acting, writing, presenting, and more recently as a social commentator – His dry, clever and intelligent life commentary makes him a sought-after talent.

When Tim first teamed with Merrick Watts for a one-off comedy gig in 1996 neither realised what a force they would create. The partnership developed into comedy tours and in 1998 they started a weekly guest spot on Triple J, soon moving into full time presenting.

Apart from success as a duo, Tim has also carved a niche as a TV reporter/presenter. In 2009, he became a guest entertainment reporter for Nine’s Today Show.

In 2013 Tim unleashed his talents into new uncharted territory with his unique stand-up show ‘Man about the House’ which was set in historical architecturally designed homes. He had sell-out seasons in Melbourne, Sydney and New Zealand and continues to tour nationally.

More recently it was Tim’s skilful delivery on ABC’s Streets of Your Town that reminded TV audiences of his all-round talent. The show was a two-part factual television documentary that looked at Australian suburbs. The series explored how and why Australian suburbs look the way they do. Interviewees included Peter McIntyre, Kevin McCloud and Alain de Botton. The show was rated the most watched arts program on the ABC last year.

This interest in architecture has led to Tim speaking at The 50’s and 60’s House Symposium (Museum of Sydney) Home Series talks (Government House), Sydney Design Week, and he has recently become the ambassador for The Historic Houses Trust Sydney Open. In 2012 he became a member of Creative Services Advisory Committee for the Historic Houses Trust.

Tim’s latest show draws from his newest book, The Rumpus Room, a collection of stories about his obsession with collecting furniture, Australian architecture and Aussie culture. From the beachside holiday house to the backyard pool and the rumpus room, the architecture of the suburbs forms the backdrop to a uniquely Australian way of life. Ross roams through these familiar places to paint a picture of Australian domesticity and its relationship to the Australian psyche in all its funny, nostalgic, ironic and often acutely cringe-worthy glory.

Tim made a stop at our Brisbane showroom in August to share his work with a sold-out crowd and this Thursday (2 November), Tim is due to appear in our Perth showroom. Unfortunately tickets are again sold out for this event but The Rumpus Room is available to buy at Living Edge Showrooms and online.
