    Stockholm Standouts 2018

At last week’s Stockholm Design week and Furniture & Light Fair, despite low temps and grey cloud coverage, the annual event shone as a beacon of Scandi cool, attracting editors and buyers from all over the world to a cavernous exhibition hall just outside the city centre.

Scandinavian design is now on-trend like never-before. While Scandinavian brands dominate the exhibition, Muuto consistently stands out as a crowd favourite. This year, Muuto showcased a selection of their most admired designs alongside several reimagined additions.

The brand recently introduced new editions of the Outline Sofa, Loft Chair and Fiber Armchair, as well as new finishes to the classic Muuto Dots collection, and debuted the Mimic Mirror at Imm Cologne; they took STockholm as another opportunity to showcase these exciting new designs in a traditionally stunning pastel display.

Established & Sons' exhibited for the first time at Stockholm and featured the work of cutting-edge designers: Alexander Taylor, Barber & Osgerby, Nao Tamura, Raw Edges, Richard Woods, Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec, Sebastian Wrong, Sylvain Willenz and Wouter Scheublin. E&S also introduced a new addition to the iconic Quilt range.

The Quilt series designed by Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec now features a smaller version of the classic armchair. Without losing any of the comfort or character of the original, the new smaller armchair has a 31% reduced footprint, making it more versatile for both domestic and commercial use. The new Quilt is shown for the first time in innovative, stretchable wool fabric Boussac-Odyssee, by French fabric atelier Pierre Frey. The product range is made with a strong glass-fibre shell, metal powder-coated base, upholstered with a honeycomb-like pattern which is filled with individual foam inserts.

In a pop up installation, Lambert & Fils welcomed guests to take part of its exhibition Symbiosis, as they unveiled the Mile, their latest collection designed in collaboration with Guillaume Sasseville. Together they explored the iconic linear suspension light, distilled the classic archetype to its core functionality and reimagined its design as a poetic, sculptural expression both in its form and in the way its light illuminates a space. For the Mile’s European premiere, the Stockholm based design studio HAHA was invited to curate the exhibition. In a splendid atmosphere surrounded by wildflowers and plants, HAHA played with the notion of the lamps habitat.

This year HOWE celebrates its 90th anniversary; to kick off a year of celebration the brand launched its new collection, Essential Workspace. The new line of solid wood furniture designed by Morten Nikolajsen was created for the modern office. The line was conceived as a simple, light, warm and cohesive alternative to the functional, aluminium-dominated furniture commonly seen in the corporate environment.

Essential Workspace aims to bring the same inspiring design studio feel to every kind of workplace, while also introducing to it the inviting, aesthetically considered atmosphere of the home. With a smooth, full radius edge tying the desk, table and shelves together, Essential Workspace references the Nordic design tradition of Morten Nikolajsen’s homeland.

The pieces work together within the open-plan workspaces many companies are adopting to reduce formality in their office environments. In this way, the line helps businesses encourage people to choose coming to the office over working remotely.
