Extremis was founded 25 years ago by Dirk Wynants. The Extremis furniture design collection represents products that are both necessary and useful. The “tools for togetherness” found in the Extremis design furniture collection focus on human interaction, intelligent problem-solving and sustainability with the ambition to improve lives.

Ever since 1998, Extremis has been bringing its extraordinary furniture collection to the prestigious design week in Milan. For their 2019 fair presentation Extremis’ aim was to highlight the stories and hidden qualities behind its designs. Extremis feels at the heart of every piece of furniture is a function designed to serve the users. The surprising multifunctionality, intelligent solutions and key values are hidden behind non-intrusive aesthetics and need to be explained so that visitors can discover their full potential. In order to reveal their secrets, inspire visitors and give them an experience to treasure, Extremis showcased a few of its iconic pieces in a pop-up museum style exhibition at the Salone del Mobile.

Walrus is one of Extremis’ pieces of furniture that has a valuable story behind its design. The paradox of the outdoor sofa served as a trigger to develop an outdoor sofa that is super-convenient and that solves some real sticking points. Dirk Wynants was bothered by the fact that a lot of outdoor sofas are covered with an ugly protective cover. That is why Extremis designed its own outdoor sofa that does not need a protective cover and that solves the hassle of having to run around with cushions. Extremis turned the whole idea inside out: the sofa became the protective cover and the cushions are safely hidden on the inside of the sofa. There is no need for protection in bad weather. When the sun decides to shine, you have instant dry seating.

“Walrus was actually developed for ‘lazy’ people to make their life a little bit easier. In my opinion laziness, or the inherent desire for convenience, is a positive trait to have as a designer. Someone who likes to have it easy will look for solutions to make life effortless, which makes ‘lazy’ people excellent problem solvers.”  Dirk Wynants about Walrus
