Awarded Best British Designer for Elle Decoration’s 2013/14 awards, Bethan Gray has established her name as an industry leader. The UK based designer has produced unique and bespoke pieces for global brands as well as her own collections and has gained a loyal and global fan base while doing so. Living Edge is proud to be the exclusive distributor in Australia and will display select pieces in all of our showrooms.

Gray’s work is as intriguing as her background and certainly influenced by and expressive of it. Her family hails from an ancient Rajasthani clan that over centuries migrated across Arabia and Persia before settling in the Celtic heartland of Wales. Through her own personal travels across India, Asia, the Middle East, Northern Africa and South America, she has collected a treasure trove of objects and memories that provide her with infinite inspiration.

Gray’s heritage and experiences have woven a rich pattern of influences through her work as she draws on motifs, forms and craft traditions from the East and West. Gray has an innate ability to translate and transform a variety of cultural references into iconic contemporary pieces.

Gray works with talented craftspeople from all over the world, her partnership with Iranian artist Mohamad Reza Shamsian has allowed Gray to further develop her interest in Islamic art while providing Shamsian with the opportunity to translate his traditional craft skills into modern and contemporary design. The Shamsian Collection, named for the artist, is heavily inspired by Omani architectural references and craft and showcases his meticulous marquetry work with inlaid solid brass and paua shell.

The Shamsian Nizwa Cabinet is the centrepiece of the collection. It is made from Italian maple veneer with a hand-stained turquoise ombré and brass detailing inspired by the intricate patterning of the Omani fort for which the cabinet is named.

The Shamsian Masirah collection has delicate brass inlay and its symmetrical and harmonious pattern takes inspiration from the rounded, wooden hulks of traditional Dhow sailing vessels.

At this year's designjunction during the London Design Festival (16-22 September)  Bethan Gray presented new monochrome marquetry and brass pieces from her Shamsian Collection, and a hand carved marble tea set.

Playfully named the Victoria tea set, Gray took inspiration from traditional tea sets in the ceramics archive at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Victoria celebrates the ritual of drinking tea, merging a classic British tradition with marble, a classic Italian material. The collection features a relief pattern, hand-carved from Arrabescato marble by Italian master craftsmen. This fine edging and the use of elegant shapes adds a delicacy to the marble pieces, just as fine as the ceramics found at the Victoria and Albert Museum. Brushed brass is also used to add lustre and warmth. The tea set, designed for Editions Milano, consists of a teapot, a milk jug, a sugar bowl, a cake stand, teacup and saucer and a dessert plate.

Simply put, Gray’s work is extraordinary, exquisite and elegant and is now available to order through all Living Edge showrooms and online at livingedge.com.au.
