    Herman Miller Hits NYC

Michigan-based furniture company Herman Miller, often recognised as the pioneer of the modern workplace and the birthplace of classic mid-century design, recently moved its New York-based operation to a 1909 office building in New York City’s Flatiron District.

Herman Miller joined forces with Vincent Brandy Architect to create a multi-story space featuring multiple different showrooms and a retail space. The first floor of the building is set to become Herman Miller’s first permanent retail store opening in North America this fall. The remaining 30,000 square feet are dedicated to Herman Miller’s residential and contract showrooms, with the last remainder being shared by Design Within Reach and Herman Miller-owned Geiger International and fabric manufacturer Maharam.

The brief was to create a cohesive envelope between all levels from what had become a vacant and out-of-date space, while still allowing each entity to retain its own identity. Seamless vertical access between levels was crucial to highlight the strong connection between Herman Miller’s residential and commercial aesthetic, as was showcasing the influence of mid-century moguls such as Charles and Ray Eames, George Nelson, and Alexander Girard, amongst other contemporary talents in the Herman Miller range. The Living Office guidelines, pioneered by Herman Miller, were also a key factor in dictating the layout of the space.

All furnishings selected for display throughout the entire building were either manufactured or represented by Herman Miller, and include pieces from Herman Miller, Stellar Works and BassamFellows.
