    Herman Miller at NeoCon 2016

“The words community and coworking were all over NeoCon this year,” Cheryl Durst, the executive vice president and CEO of IIDA, the International Interior Design Association, told us after the show. It seems, she added, that “large organisations want to create a coworking environment in their space.”

The evolution of commercial interiors has been a steep one in recent years, with continued innovation and research resulting in workspaces that adapt to the changing ways we work - and with a much more pronounced focus on design-lead thinking.

NeoCon 2016, held in Chicago in June this year, showcased the giant leaps made my many furniture companies to evolve in line with the new ways we work.

Key themes this year included: flexibility, mobility, community, and choice. Leading on from the evolution of coworking in previous years, this year's exhibition saw many pieces designed to facilitate privacy within open space, adapt to shifting personel needs and flexibility in how these key pieces can be utilised as workplaces change.

“The words community and coworking were all over NeoCon this year,” Cheryl Durst, the executive vice president and CEO of IIDA, the International Interior Design Association, told us after the show. It seems, she added, that “large organizations want to create a coworking environment in their space.”

Leading the charge was Herman Miller, who set out to 'demonstrate how it's products aid in creating purposeful places where individuals and organizations can prosper'.

Herman Miller's shared their latest research-lead thinking about people and work and illustrated the significant shifts in the way spaces are being planned to support them.

    Living Office

Herman Miller's Living Office presentation continues to demonstrate how applying a deeper understanding of what makes us human helps organisations tailor their management methods, tools, and places of work to express and enable shared purpose, character, and activities. Displays included many different workspace formations - from executive offices, through to flexible co-working space.

The South Lobby at the Mart

Herman Miller kitted out the lobby space of NeoCon, which was utilised by 53,000 attendees during the event, with the principal pieces from their collection. Participants were invited to pause, connect, and recharge in the South Lobby of the Merchandise Mart. It was a vibrant setting outfitted with Herman Miller's dynamic range of furnishings—from iconic designs reimagined in fresh materials, to new introductions designed to redefine comfort in the workplace.
