Much has been made of award-winning Welsh designer Bethan Gray’s multicultural roots. Gray delivers on the hype each time, proving the importance of a diverse range of influences.

Although she is now based in London, Bethan Gray’s background spans countries and continents. Her heritage can be traced back to an ancient Rajasthani clan, whose international journey started in Arabia and Persia and eventually led them to the Celtic heartland of Wales. At each step along the way, Gray’s ancestors wove together a dense web of influences and traditions: taking a handcrafting skill from here, a colour palette from there, and a pleasingly diverse set of details from everywhere.

As her design career developed, Gray’s curatorial eye and impeccable craftsmanship were honed by international travels across India, the Middle East, North Africa, and South America, all regions with strong – and disparate – takes on design. Like a sparrow, Gray collected trinkets and mementos from her travels, arranging them in an eclectic tableau that has since informed her own work. Today, Gray’s design practice is all the richer for it, and incorporates a characteristically broad spectrum of materials, techniques, colours, and stylistic elements.

Gray’s two new collections for the 2018 Salone reflect this international influence, and have a distinctly global, multicultural flavour. Her new collection of Italian marble luminaires takes this flavour and pares it back to a muted, restrained minimum: sumptuous forms are hand-carved by master artisans to create stunning table, wall, and pendant lights like no other.

Alice, the second Gray collection launched at Milan this year, is a fresh new take on a series of black and white marble table-top pieces initially premiered at the 2013 Salone. Drawing inspiration from the inimitable 12th century Siena Cathedral, the Alice collection makes imaginative use of monochrome, using it to mark out striking geometric patterns in tabletop pieces, bowls, and a set of three cake stands.

Gray reminds us that design – like humans – cannot exist in isolation, and is at its most vibrant and engaging when it draws from multiple and diverse sources of inspiration.
