Initially designed for first-class dining on Qantas Dreamliners and A380s, Caon describes his design for the dinnerware as being driven by elegance, ergonomics and ethical conscience.
“We were tasked with creating a very special inflight dining experience,” says Caon. “While the focus for the collection was to be beauty and functionality, Qantas asked that we also minimise its carbon footprint by reducing the weight of the range by 11 per cent.”
The result is a unique and timeless collection, crafted in fine bone china, that features a minimal aesthetic that is both light and delicate to hold, yet extremely robust. The profile of each piece has been formed with the same 800mm arc – which can be seen from the arch on the cups through to the raised rims on the plates and platters. This curve, inspired by the Dreamliner interiors (also designed by Caon), creates a consistent design language across the entire collection.
The inspired design of the David Caon collection fulfilled the Qantas brief on all counts – the lighter weight of each piece reduced the airline’s carbon footprint by an impressive 11 per cent, resulting in an average annual saving of 535,000 kg of fuel. Further benefits for the consumer include the superior durability and chip resistance of the pieces – designed to withstand industrial washing and stacking as well as transportation to and from the aircraft, the rigours of daily domestic use present no real challenges!
